Cleopatra Jones actress Tamara Dobson dies

Hold it sucker!

A bit of a sad one to report really, given the coolness of her onscreen persona. Tamara Dobson, the six feet two model turned actress died of pneumonia resulting from multiple sclerosis (Oct 2). Tamara Dobson is no doubt best known for her role as the kick ass Cleopatra Jones, which she first made in 1973 (reprising the role in Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold 1975).

Cleopatra Jones was, as the movie tagline stated “Ten Miles of Bad Road For Every Hood in Town”. She dealt hard blows to drug traffickers and bas asses everywhere. The film is thought of as one of the great blaxploitation films, making it into the top ten, despite having some obvious stereotyping elements and a camped up nature.

If Cleopatra Jones looks familiar to younger movie lovers, who perhaps missed out on its camped up delights, perhaps that’s because the character of Foxy Cleopatra (played by Beyonce Knowles) in the Austin Powers film Goldmember was based on her.

Losing my young brother to aids,battling breast cancer and diabeties,caring for my sisters and trying to keep a roof over ours heads I have lost touch with the events of the world. I was looking at the acadmedy awards last night when they flashed Tamara Dobson picture across the scream,I was shocked. My whole family loved her and we did not know she was gone. She has left her mark in our hearts. She will be a tough act to follow.

I do not remember Ms. Dobson but all I know is when I walk down the street or go in public people tell me that I remind them and look like her. I recently Goggoled her name and came up with this site. I am in the Martial Arts and wear an afro and dress like her but I never saw her before. I like her style, maybe I have her spirit in me.

I finally found out what happened to the beautiful Tamara Dobson, I tried a few years back and found nothing except the movies she appeared in but no information on where she was or what she was doing. Thanks for the update. There was a television special a few months ago on the whole black exploitation movement and she was not represented which was a shame. For us African-American women who are still searching for identity she and others meant a lot.
