Now if they could just add porn...
BitTorrent Inc., the makers of the fine technology that was often used to trade pirated copies movies via the internet, has launched a website that will sell legal downloads of films and TV shows. What is the world coming to?!
The BitTorrent Entertainment Network (website HERE) launched Monday with a decent selection of films from Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Lionsgate - plus TV shows such as 24 and Punk'd.
So why do they think they have a shot at this new market which has so far, not produced much results? Easy! The San Francisco-based company already has name recognition among its target audience (computer-geek males between the age of 15 and 35), they’ve got cheap pricing to ‘rent’ the movie or shows for 24 hours ($2.99 - $3.99 for movies, $1.99 for TV shows), fast download time AND they are betting that at least one-third of the 135 MILLION people who have downloaded the BitTorrent software will be willing to pay for high-quality, non “get-your-ass-thrown-in-jail” content. It's a good bet.
"The vast majority of our audience just loves digital content," says Ashwin Navin, president and co-founder of BitTorrent. “Now we have to program for that audience and create a better experience for that content so the audience converts to the service that makes the studios money."
Will they be successful in transitioning these users over to a fee service? We think so. With the crackdown on pirating these days it’s just getting too sketchy, the price is right, and they will be throwing in some Japanese anime and high-definition video (VERY popular among the pasty population) to sweeten the deal. Individuals will even be able to publish their works to the site and compete for attention beside studio content. Kind of like YouTube. Sounds like a successful formula… but we’ll have to wait and see!
