Now take even MORE movies on the go!
Looks like Apple's policy of allowing studios to join iTunes with only their libraries (the old stuff) and not new releases is definitely finding takers, as Lionsgate became the third to add its movie… and now IFC (Independent Film Channel) is slated to be the 4th.
The price they want to charge for new-release movies requires a lower wholesale price than studios get for DVDs-- $12.99 the first week, $14.99 thereafter – and has deterred all the studios away from showing new release except for Disney (only because Apple CEO Steve Jobs is the largest individual shareholder). And most studios are not yet willing to piss off its retailers. Smart move for now, at least till the download market is stronger. The library titles fetch $9.99 on iTunes.
Lionsgate joins Paramount and Disney; adding about 150 movies to iTunes this month, including Terminator 2, Basic Instinct and The Blair Witch Project… bringing the titles up to over 400 films to chose from.
The film division of Rainbow Media (IFC) is launching with 13 films (all nominated this year or last at the Independent Spirit Awards), including Forest Whitaker’s film American Gun and the post-9/11 drama Sorry, Haters. So the iTunes store is getting a juicier selection all the time!
