Light & Quirky little film breaks new ground.
The lovely little film 10 items or Less just released on Friday (of course being independent means it isn’t screening in large chain movie houses) but the real story is that just two weeks after, it'll be available for digital download from Clickstar. And who’s Clickstar? A company that Morgan Freeman's production company (Revelations Entertainment) and Intel have founded to bring small movies to those who live far from boutique cinemas. How freakin’ cool is that?! In case you’re not getting it, this is a radical remodel of the basic Hollywood film release model... whereby independent films are being distributed in a totally different way.
The movie itself is darn adorable (directed by Brad Silberling who did City of Angels and that Lemony Snicket movie), an independent movie about independent movies. Freeman plays an actor who hasn’t made a movie in 4 years, but is considering signing onto a little independent film. He is dropped off at a small, local supermarket to research his part as a night manger. He meets the sassy ’10 items or less’ checkout girl Scarlet (Paz Vega) and they forge a friendship as they show each other their respective worlds. Lots of a laughs ensue and some sincerely funny moments, as well as some obvious ‘filler’ spots to beef up the length of this short (82 minutes) film. But overall, worth checking out… especially as you can just download it!
Watching Morgan freeman play this ‘light’ character (when we’re obviously used to some deep, deep Freeman like Driving Miss Daisy, The Shawshank Redemption or Se7en) is worth the price alone. He’s still going strong (having just done last year’s March of the Penguins) and you can see he has a real love for what he does… and we think this mission to make independent films available to everyone really shows that. "Where I live, in my town, there's no movie house," he says. "There are many, many, many, many people who don't have access."
The idea may not be new; as you can obviously download to your heart’s content at many sites, but Clickstar is the first one to offer first-run movies. So on December 15th, check out 10 items or Less (you can view the 10 items or Less trailer HERE) and you’re your eyes peeled this spring for their next offering of Lonely Hearts (starring John Travolta and James Gandolfini). They don’t have an Lonely Hearts official website, but you can get more info at John Travolta’s official website HERE.
