Here come the AFA's!
Please welcome the Asian Film Awards, organized by the Hong Kong Intl. Film Festival. It’s brand new to the fine roster of film kudos events around the world, and aiming to please! (And not clashing with the Hong Kong Film Awards on April 15th.)
Kicking off on March 30 (to coincide with the first complete day of the Filmart trade show and opening night of the Hong Kong Festival) the competition will involve about 33 films in 10 categories, ranging from best film to screenwriting, cinematography and visual effects. The lineup was announced on Monday, showing up to six nominees in each category, having screened more than 700 eligible films. Argh… that must be a job!
Unlike other awards in Asia that select according to nationality or ethnicity, the Asian Film Awards are intended to be pan-Asian (the first!) and span the full range of genres... which means a more varied roster.
"With more than 4 billion people in Asia -- 60% of the global population -- a celebration of Asian cinema is long overdue," Wilfred Wong, chairman of the Hong Kong Intl. Film Festival Society, said. "We aim to make the AFA the most prominent and definitive film awards for the region."
We won’t overwhelm you with the full lineup (you can see that HERE) but here’s the list of the top categories:
