Grand-pappy Clint must be psyched to be receiving this fine award at the Los Angeles Film Festival (more details HERE) on June 28, as none other than Tony Bennett will be handing it over. Makes sense, as the two are working together on Tony Bennett: The Music Never Ends, with Eastwood as the exec producer and film interviewer.

"Clint Eastwood has been called an icon, a maverick, a legend and every superlative in between, yet it's utterly impossible to encapsulate the talents and accomplishments of his independent spirit and his singular vision for honest storytelling," said Dawn Hudson, executive director of Film Independent.  "We are thrilled to celebrate this remarkable artist for his independent voice and daring career choices that have been an inspiration to filmmakers and film lovers alike."

The last two years have seen George Clooney (2005) and Charlize Theron (2006) wander off with the award, so now it’s Clint’s turn. Congrats!

Interesting news here… as Salma Hayek is suddenly all over the place (okay… maybe it's just us but it seems like she’s everywhere right now!) and has now joined MGM, along with her partner Jose Tamez, to create the production label Ventanazul. This new alliance (that sounds more like an intestinal affliction) will acquire, develop and produce Latin-themed material and utilize Latin American and Hispanic talent on both sides of the camera.

MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands said "There's a lot of talent in the Latin community, and a lot of it's been untapped historically. We're going to try and open up that community to Hollywood and pick the material with the most universal themes. Budgets for the mainly English-language projects (2-4 a year) will run from $5 million to $25 million, said Sands, "depending on what the material is and who's in it."  Wow. Specific little bugger, isn't he!?

Boob-a-licious Hayek will be apparently in charge of the whole thing, stepping in when she wants, producing when she wants, etc. and little Miss company prexy-CEO will be in a fully equal partnership with MGM. The production deal is the second for MGM after November's announcement of the United Artists rebirthing with Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner.

"Don't be surprised if we do this one or two more times," offered Sands. "It's part of our ongoing strategy to be in business with top content providers, and we were fortunate enough to be able to partner with Tom Cruise, and now Salma." Argh… we wonder if Salma minds having her name spoke in the same sentence as this weirdo.

Okay, here’s a tidbit for you Asian cinema lovers -  this may not be the first movie about the Nanjing Massacre, but it’s the first to received approval from Chinese authorities – so Lu Chuan is all set to start production.

Nanjing! Nanjing! will chronicle the 1937 massacre where more than 300,000 Chinese were murdered, when the Japanese occupied the then-capital Nanjing. With a budget of more than 25.6 million and rumors of a scene in which 40,000 people are killed, this could be one kick-ass film!

The director learned about the massacre while attending a military school, and said "When I was in the school, I heard so many stories about Nanjing Massacre and I have wanted since then to shoot a film about the event." Looks like his dream will come true as he should have it finished by the end of this year. You can read more about this up and coming director HERE.

After getting all serious and whatnot in Reign Over Me, Adam Sandler is back to where he really belongs… comedy. Production begins this year on Disney's Bedtime Stories, with Adam Shankman (New Line’s Hairspray that releases in July) directing.

Sandler plays a harried real estate developer whose life is suddenly turned upside down when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew begin to come true. Matt Lopez wrote the script and producing will be both Andrew Gunn's Gunn Films and Sandler with producing partner Jack Giarraputo through Happy Madison Productions.

Disney, as usual, has perfect timing and is set to release the film for the 2008 holidays (we’ll get you that preview as soon as it’s available!) – while we’re looking forward to getting our favorite goof back. Not that we don’t support his trying something different like Punch Drunk Love or this latest serious-fest… but we've missed the old Adam Sandler. Welcome back, buddy!

So many rumors are flying around about Kevin Smith’s next movie Red State. We’ve been hearing he wants to break into the horror genre, but now it seems he’s interested in combining it with a taste of ultra-conservative middle-America. Interesting.

Apparently Smith has been inspired by extreme church groups (like the one led by Fred Phelps – check this homophobic freak out HERE) and wants to really dive into the subject of conservatives that go too far, the government that allows them to and the people that follow them. Basically the ‘red state’ of the US. Well… he’s bound to piss off most of the US (we can hear the theatre picketers now!), but at least he’s gotten out of New Jersey. Maybe he sees himself as the next Michael Moore… but a hipper, younger version. Who knows, really.

Now we like Kevin Smith (most of his films like Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma are aces!) and certainly applaud his efforts to try something new, but wonder if he might be just a wee bit over his head. Will the subject matter come off as ‘horror’ (without a preacher gone mad and hacking liberals up into pieces), will his usual slacker audience follow him into this new ‘heavy subject matter’ endeavor, and for heavens sake… will Ben Affleck be able to make a cameo in the film?! Burning questions, to be sure, and he’s piqued our interest.

We’ll just have to wait and see if he’s able to make Conservatives, Republicans and Christians interesting enough to warrant an entire film about them - and make it into a horror flick. He’s got a big job ahead of him and supposedly he's working on the script right now to be shot "somewhere in the middle of the country" later this year. Lionsgate has announced their new film The Forbidden Kingdom which pairs Jackie Chan and Jet Li up, for the first time on the big screen! Hong Kong Fuey, baby!

Based on the Chinese legend of the monkey king, the story revolves around an American teenager who discovers the king's legendary stick weapon in a pawn shop. The kid is then transported back in time to ancient China, where he joins a crew of warriors fighting to free the imprisoned king. Li is set to play two roles, the monkey king and the silent monk while Chan will pay the monk T'sa-Ho. No word yet on the lucky teen who’ll star alongside these greats.

The indie studio is planning on rolling the film out September 2008 with Casey Silver producing (Hidalgo and unfortunately Gigli). The director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King and Stuart Little) should begin shooting in China on May 2 from a script by John Fusco.

The fight scenes should rock, as the action choreographer is Yuen Woo-ping, who turned out the goods in such films as The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And with such fine subjects to work with (only the two biggest names in martial arts!), this movie promises to deliver a fun two hours.

Speaking of Jackie Chan - he celebrated his 53rd birthday over the weekend by launching a Chinese reality TV series searching for energetic new movie talent, called The Disciple. More than 100,000 people have signed up for the competition so far, so we'd say it's a huge success! May we suggest a good Jackie Chan porn name would be ‘the man with the golden chopstick’? Oh yeah...

What a surprise - after Toby has made a big point of saying he was done playing the web-slinging superhero (when Spider-Man 3 was finished) he now admits that he could be tempted to slip into the old bodysuit again if a nice script came up. Let’s face it, he’s making mad superhero money off these flicks, and will continue to do so until the web sac runs dry.

Apparently he’s said in an interview with Sci-Fi Wire: "It all depends on if there's a story worth telling. I feel very proud of the three movies that we've made. I feel like the stories all deserve to be told, and, you know, if they come up with a good movie, and the whole team wants to get back together, and we feel like we can make a good movie that's worth making, then I'm up for it." Moral of the story is, never say never.

The big fuss is that Tobey, 31, has stated awhile ago that he wanted to walk away from his most famous role to star in more serious movies. Kirsten Dunst had echoed the same sentiments (and threw in a “I'm not the type of actress who does movie after movie.”) and as their contracts ended with the third spidey-film, it seemed like a good time to stop.

So basically, we’ll have to wait and see if there’s a 4 on the horizon. Our bet is that they’ll wait a few years and then pick the project back up again. But don't wait too long....

Hmmm… Johnny Depp and Amitabh Bachchan hitting the big screen together is surely the strangest news of the week, as its not often that Hollywood & Bollywood collide.

Acclaimed director Mira Nair is scooping up on momentum from her successful pic The Namesake, so she is able to pull of having these two big actors star in Shantaram, which is based on Gregory David Robert’s 2003 novel of the same name. Depp plays the lead character - a heroin addict who flees from an Australian prison and comes to Mumbai. Bachchan will play an underworld don. 

“The movie deals with the theme of who is a foreigner, who is a native and who determines who is the outsider,” said Ms Nair. The movie will show how Depp suddenly finds himself in a Mumbai slum and how he deals with being an outsider in a foreign land.

“After having made movies for peanuts, this is a film which will require nothing less than a peanut plantation,” quipped Ms Nair, so we’re looking at a big budget affair which is expected to begin shooting this fall.

Nair - who couldn’t be more thrilled to have scored two of the biggest celluloid actors - has been making Indian story-based films even though she’s mostly working in Hollywood. So this is a big step for her… and we’re sure the start of many new projects combining East and West.
